44 years ago, a Paper Company held a contest. The grand prize was the choice of either $3,000 or a baby elephant. The winner was a local grocer who shocked everyone when he chose the baby elephant! The winner, Jack Snyder, brought his elephant to Anchorage, Alaska and offered it to Sammye Seawell, owner of the Diamond H ranch, the only place in town that had heated stalls. The elephant, named Annabelle, was a hit with the locals and eventually Seawell decided the community needed a place to come and see wildlife of all kinds. She formed a non-profit organization and in 1969 the Anchorage Children’s Zoo opened for the first time.
